Evaluation of final TV advertisement - 13btec
Evaluation
Is your advert fit for purpose?
Our chocolate advert is appropriate because we had to abide by all rules and the brief as well. The brief consisted of Me and Aarun having to create a Cadbury advert that lasted 30 seconds but it wasn't just any old Cadbury bar, it was a Cadbury bar that we have to re-launch to make it popular again but we also have to make it so appeals to more than the original buyers. This was a challenge but me and Aarun have succeeded with our advert because we were giving a chocolate named Terry's chocolate orange and we had to give it our new ideas to make it look better and appeal to a more larger audience, The original adverts that i can remember were based on quite a mummy look and that they were only for girls so me and Aarun had to make it appropriate for both genders. Me and Aarun created an advert that appealed at a larger audience and it also stuck to 30 seconds which was the aim. Our advert was aimed at the age range of 18-30 year old, and i think we have made an advert addressed to that age range because we had our advert based in a pub and people under 18 are not allowed in the bar so this automatically made our advert look like it was in our aged range.
Clarity of communication
Me and Aarun pitched our ideas with clear speech so Mr Phillipson and Mrs Greenfield would understand what our idea was about. We had to include everything that we were going to show in our advert through our power point, We gave most of the main points that we needed to say but we also missed out a few and this is where Mr Phillipson asked us questions and we were unsure on how to answer them questions. We spoke about everything like how much our budget was to film and put our adverts on, to researching many chocolate bars that could be competition for us, we had to be sure that we picked out every point that could hinder us for the future of that project. We conveyed all of our ideas and our research that we did well and we know this as a pair because Mrs Greenfield didn't have any questions to ask us because we answered them as we were going through our power point, You can see this at 0:05, this is where Mrs Greenfield tells us that we answered all her questions as we went through our power point. Mr Phillipson picked up on a few points that we missed out on and these questions made us look deeper into our whole idea. When me and Aarun were talking about our initial idea we had to make sure that Mr Phillipson and Mrs Greenfield understands what is actually going to be happening from exactly 0:00 to 0:30, we went through our powerpoint and we came to a few slides where we had the screenshots of our drawn up idea, we were able to explain to the teachers what we are going to do for each second of the advert.
Appropriateness to audience compared with original intentions
Our advert was created around our age range of 18 to 30, we couldn't have anything in our advert that showed signs of young children in it. our advert was also a complete change from the original adverts because ours was all about two people getting together through chocolate. our whole advert was set in a bar and this setting was the right setting to use because you are not allowed children in a bar. Me and Aarun had to pick our shots wisely as well and also any props used throughout the advert. The shots we used were close ups, long shots and over the shoulder shots, all of these shots were used to see the reaction of each actor when they got denied in the first place and to also show the scene behind the actors and to give it that authenticity.
The props we used was a wine glass filled with wine, this prop helped us out dramatically because it gave the video its real age, you can see the wine glass at 0:27 and this was also our pack shot to promote the chocolate. Having the whole advert filmed in a bar with alcohol present makes the video look like its for our age range. The costumes that we used in our advert were costumes that had to match the chocolate that we were given. So our aim was initially to use one actor with a blue shirt and one with an orange shirt but in the end we just stuck to one actor wearing a blue shirt, the audience would only know the iconography after the advert was over because they will see the packaging and then they will match my shirt to the packaging.
Effectiveness of techniques
When me and Aarun were filming, we stuck to the shots that we were always going to use but when we think about using other shots, we automatically knew that it would never work because it has to be 30 seconds long and we knew that a tracking shot would be way too long. Our editing had to be accurate so anyone that watched our advert would know and understand everything that happens, the edits were simple apart from the fade in and out at the beginning and end. Me and Aarun had to use a voice recorder for the ending of our advert and we needed Aarun to say our slogan that we made ourselves and we also needed him to say it so it matched the style of chocolate we had. We done many takes on the voice recorder until we found one that suited it exactly and it also worked with the timings that we had.
Me and Aarun had to get some background sound of the bar and also some music to give it that originality. We found some good bar sounds where people were just talking and this also matched the advert well because it worked and it wasn't overpowering our voices and the music that we used was a song by 'Klangkarussell - Sonnentanz ft. Will Heard' this song also worked very well because at one point in our advert where Aarun places down the chocolate so does a beat in the song so it looks good and we done this without even knowing. This can be seen at 0:13 to 0:15, the beat of the song can clearly be heard as Aarun places down the chocolate.
The graphics that are in our advert are graphics that are at the beginning and end, We used these graphics so people can also read what our slogan is as well as hearing it and also the graphics at the beginning could be a trend starter on twitter. It also worked very well because we stuck to the colours of the packaging that surrounded our chocolate.
Effectiveness of content
In our advert we had to make it suit our age range so what was going to be involved had to be acceptable just for them. Straight away at 0:01 the shot changes from a black screen into a bar scene. A bar straight away tells me that children are not involved in this kind off advert. I also think that this shot can engage the audience in a certain way and this way is because of the bar, You don't see many adverts on TV with a bar so i think this could easily engage the audience. Another part in our advert could be the the part with graphics on, '#teamterry' this right at the beginning can be an incentive to watch the full advert, they could see that and question what it really means. These graphics are shown at 0:00 to 0:01, they are shown quickly to grab the viewers attention and for them to think what the advert is going to be about. We had to include graphics in our work so it was clear and it also gave the advert some style so the audience could be entertained while watching, we also wanted our graphics at the beginning of our video to connote the style and also the packaging of the chocolate. We had to make sure that the audience understood what they were initially watching the whole time.
Effectiveness of conventions
The conventions that we originally focused on doing were stand alone, memory lane, realist narrative and parody, we chose these because we wanted our advert to be funny but remembered by everyone that watched the advert. We ended up creating an advert which consisted of the other conventions but it didn't really have parody. The only side of parody included in our advert would be the fact that chocolate can make you get girls when chocolate can't really do that. the impact that this could have on the audience is that they will remember it because its a funny situation. This shot is at 0:19 and you see me place the chocolate on the bar for the girl to look at and for it to work on getting the actors together.
We chose to use as stand alone and memory conventions because we made this advert as a single advert, there will be no advert that will follow on from this so that is why we chose stand alone and we also chose memory because we want people to remember this advert in the future due to its small parody and also the difference in scenery compared to original Terry's chocolate orange adverts.
We also chose realist narrative because the whole scenario has to be shown clearly that the audience watching the advert will understand but i think they would understand in many ways because the whole scenario is part of life but we have made a joke about it by including a chocolate.
Impact of work
We created the advert focusing on the audience all the time and making sure that it will appeal to them in many ways. We made an advert and gave Terry's chocolate orange a whole new look, with a new slogan as well. Our message was all about a chocolate being able to pull a girl and i think we portrayed this image well because at 0:05 to 0:09 the boy approaches the girl but gets turned down straight away. We then have the boy go and get the chocolate from his friend that offered it to him, he then returns to the girl with the chocolate and then the girl changes her mind and gets with the boy. Our slogan as well also shows what our advert is about and it can also persuade people to buy the chocolate. People will see the slogan and believe that this chocolate will give them confidence.
We have mainly aimed our advert at the younger age range of 18-30 because we have included the whole situation of someone being able to pull, this is a situation that many young teens go through so we thought it would be funny to say that a chocolate is able to do this for them. We didn't want to forget about our older side of our age range so we thought that having the chocolate at the end at 0:27 with our slogan would make them laugh because they remember the chocolate being more of a luxury chocolate and we have given it a whole new look.
Technical qualities
When me and Aarun went of to film and we arrived at our location we made sure that the lighting was good and that the whole scenery was just what we wanted, and it was, it looked really nice and i am happy with how it looked. We made sure that we got all of the filming done in one shoot, just because we had everything we needed and we knew that we could film everything as well. during our filming i think the only problems we had was when we looked through the footage after filming and noticed and were told that our footage was just too dark, so we had to make sure that we went back out to the same location wearing the exact same clothes and also ready to get the filming done. We had to make sure that the scenery wasn't dark again otherwise we would have had to move to a lighter spot. But luckily this time where we filmed before was lighter so we were able to get the shots we needed. When it came to editing we had to look through our footage and make sure we saw no mistakes that we may have missed when we looked back through the footage. we found no mistakes but we found that we had many re-shoots due to people forgetting to do something or they just were not focused when the camera was rolling. once we had acknowledged all of the footage we then started doing using our editing skills and putting the footage together. We also had to get sound clips of a bar sound and also music and a voice over of Aarun saying our slogan.
Aesthetic qualities
Overall i think the advert looked really good and it was edited well as well. The actors that were in our advert dressed up nicely and appropriately for them to be in our advert, We also had made sure that one actor which was me wore the color of either blue or orange so it gave us some identification to the product we were advertising for. Here you can see me wearing a blue shirt for the advert and this can be seen at 0:03.
The other actors wore normal clothes and these clothes were appropriate for our advert and that was the main thing we wanted.
The setting that we used as well worked perfectly for our advert because this setting was what we wanted the whole time so it worked out fine. We also chose the bar because we knew it would suit our age range and the target audience we were making our advert for. We also wanted to give the chocolate Terry's chocolate orange a whole new look, we didn't want to keep it in a home environment so that's why we gave it a new look and also the advert is unique.
All the actors worked well together because we helped each other out and also kept each other informed on what to say or what to do. There was no arguments or questions from the actors and this is how we were able to film with hardly any faults at all. All characters, settings and costumes worked well together because nothing looked completely different and out of the ordinary, if there were any signs of this during our filming then i think me and Aarun would have to make some rearrangements and make sure that everything looks ok and natural.

Production log (updated every week)
23/12/13
During the holidays me and Aarun had to get everything planned with our actors and also our location that we wanted to film on. The problems that me and Aarun had for our filming is that our original location told us that we couldn't film there any more and they told us on a short notification so we had to work quickly and use somewhere else. me and Aarun called up the local pub named `The White Horse` this pub allowed us to film here and we are very grateful for that. We also had the other problem that our original actors pulled out on us so we had to use me and our friend Rohini, she helped stood in as the women actress. We had no technical problems so when we filmed it went really well.
The next thing that me and Aarun plan to do is edit our footage and see if we have any mistakes or extra footage that we have to film.
These two bars wouldn't let us film but we were able to film at the white horse.
6/1/14
This week we have looked at all our footage that we had filmed and we had checked very carefully and came to a conclusion that our footage did need to be re-shot because our footage was too dark and that we lacked in dialogue so we had to film them shots once again but with dialogue this time, so we had to re-film. we had to re-contact the pub and ask if we can come back and film our footage and they were kind and allowed us too, we also had to ask Rohini if she can help us get some shots again and she was excited and up for it again which was a positive out come for me and Aarun. Me and Aarun went and got our filming done on the Thursday straight after lunch and when we got there we got everything set up and filmed within an hour which was quick. The next day me and Aarun went through the footage again and noticed a big improvement with the light so we were able to use this footage and create our advert, all me and Aarun have to do now is get some sound in and tidy it up.
13/1/14
This week we carried on with our editing by trying to get our whole advert narrowed down to exactly 30 seconds, when we got it to 30 seconds and we were confident with the way it looked, we had to begin to work on everything around that 30 seconds like transitions, sound of the bar and also the music for the background. These are all needed to make an advert look really good. We also needed Aarun to do a voice recording of him saying our slogan at the end and we recorded a few and choose the best one out of the lot and added it into our video. This was all done last week and for the next week are going to add in the music and make sure that everything runs smoothly without no errors.
20/1/14
During this week me and Aarun had to make sure that our advert looked to its best standard without any silly mistakes being made. We had to go over all graphics and make sure they looked good as well, we took our time editing and also re shooting and we enjoyed doing the whole project as a whole. Me and Aarun have worked well together and i think we both agree that we pulled off our final advert with the corrections and alterations to the shots. The advert was also 30 seconds so i think that was a good achievement as well.
